The Pipe Dream

Adam Hibberd

Unfortunately for so many in certain western countries now, the notion of plenty is only a wonderful pipe dream, a dream which can only be achieved through luck or circumstance and less frequently through hard work, such is the fundamental unfairness of the crooked system we have at the moment. This is a system where so much wealth and power lies in the hands of a few, and so little by a huge majority.

I am reminded of Winston Churchill’s words in WW II concerning the magnificent defence of our nation by the RAF in the Battle of Britain, ‘never was so much owed by so many to so few’, and I notice a strange irony in its relevance to what is happening today in the west with countries once considered fundamentally and imperviously incorruptible bastions of freedom and democracy.

It seems wealth is being mobilised upwards under the extreme politics which exist at the moment, to a few who are not so much interested in the well-being of their nation as we associate with the heroes of the RAF, but instead in the well-being of themselves. That’s a big shame, we are being let down by the few who should be most selfless – those in power at the top – who are instead the most self-serving.
